Hello!

Welcome to the Zen Grappler blog where I will discuss everything from my love/hate relationship with my favourite sport in the world Jiu-Jitsu, yoga, the odd conspiracy theory and how the world is being run by idiots (just kidding...kinda!).

I thought I would kick off my first blog post of 2018 as the majority of us kick off a new year - by setting some intentions and goals. In January of every year we are bombarded with advertisements telling us that it's time for a "NEW YOU" but if the you that you currently are is pretty great then keep doing you boo! I like the "me' that I currently am but if you want to continue to grow as a person and hit personal milestones setting some intentions for the new year can be helpful and can give you something to look back on as 2018 progresses.

My biggest intention of this year is to continue to work towards bettering my jiujitsu. A very common theme of this blog will be jiujitsu. I have been doing jiujitsu for just over two years and I am in love with it as much as I loathe it but that's what makes it so addictive!

With the International Brazilian Jiujitsu Federation European Championships a mere 11 days away I have set myself the intention of performing at a high standard and by performing at this standard I hope to be willing away with the gold medal in the under-69kg female white-belt division. This year I want to compete as much as possible to improve my jiujitsu and picking up a few gold medals along the way wouldn't hurt either.

However, because I am a realist and I am aware of my own limitations, I must also set myself a gentle reminder that "I am and the universe is" to me this means that I can only control my actions and reactions to others and situations - therefore if on the day of competition my matches don't go exactly as I have planned and envisioned a million times, I must use it as an opportunity to reflect on what went wrong and what I need to work on in the gym, to fix the weaknesses and holes in my jiujitsu (and yes it is ok to cry into a tub of Ben & Jerry's but then you gotta dust yourself off kid and get back on the mats!!)

Another intention that I am setting myself this year is to expand my yoga practice to include yoga into my life every damn day (#yogaeverydamnday). This intention has started off well by following along with the yoga with Adriene 30 days TRUE practice. My motive for this is to become more in tune with my body; start working with my body and not against it (it's the year of self love folks!!); to become more flexible (to reduce risk of injury in jiujitsu and to one day have an unpassable guard - hey a girl can dream!)

As with every other year I want to pet more dogs, do cool shit with my friends and my boyfriend, find new ways to empower women and girls all over the world and eat some delicious food!!

What are some of your intentions for 2018?

Thanks for reading, have a wonderful day.

The Zen Grappler x
